A youtube CatholicVote.com video someone forwarded to me both gave me chills and turned my stomach as an American and as a Christian. Let's see-- the pro-life rhetoric would imply that those who are for choice and who recognize the presence of God in difficult choices are against life? Pro life-- like the 11 year old Latin American girl who was raped and refused medical care to terminate a pregnancy that her young undeveloped body could not safely carry to term-- Her parents took her to another country to terminate the pregnancy-- back home THEY were excommunicated, while the rapist received the eucharist. Shameful! And family values-- well, PART of the family. Gay and lesbian people are equated to God's mistakes, seminaries are "purged" of homosexuals as if there were a link between homosexuality and pedofile priests. Shameful! What about "Thou shalt not bear false witness...." Flex the muscle of hierarchy and hegemony and work on the guilt factor to influence the vote. It reminds me of when the curia was totally alligned with "political power and the wealthy" in Latin America and railed against the "theology of hope." Or when the curia railed against French worker priests for being pastorally involved with people from labor unions. The fear was that they were "communists!" ...socialistic pinko demons. Of course at the same time the pope and the curia knew of the holocaust two years before its end and said NOTHING!!! Yes, I will vote my conscience-- and my faith. "Faith is not submission to a human authority, but complete trust in God." (And, how DARE you use footage of the Berragan brothers to push a pro-war agenda! They fought against the Viet Nam war-- while Vietnamese catholics were being bombed in another political war. I am reminded of the words of Christ from the cross "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." May God protect us from fear and the perversion of the Gospel by those who would use it to subjugate others.
